DES MOINES, Iowa - A northeast Iowa man said he had multiple family members double-check what he saw on his lottery ticket before he finally started to believe he had won a $50,000 prize.
"I looked at it. There is no possible way," Nicholas Pickar of Riceville said. "This doesn't happen to us."
Pickar, 32, purchased two tickets in the "Instantly Rich" instant-scratch game on Nov. 8 at Andy's Mini Mart, 203 E. Main St. in Riceville, and played them the same day.
"I normally scratch the second one first because it seems like that's always the winner and that was a $20 one," he said. "Then I scratched the first one and that's the big one and I was like, 'Whoa! This is weird.'"
Pickar, who works at Iowa Select Farms, claimed his prize Tuesday at the lottery's regional office in Mason City. He claimed the fourth of 10 top prizes of $50,000 available in the Instantly Rich game.
Pickar said he and his wife, Rachel, plan to purchase a newer vehicle with the lottery winnings.
Instantly Rich is a $5 scratch game. If a player reveals a "thumbs up" symbol, they win the prize shown below that symbol. If a player reveals a "chest" symbol, they win double the prize shown below that symbol. The overall odds of winning a prize in the game are 1 in 3.41.
Six top prizes of $50,000 are still up for grabs in Instantly Rich, as well as 21 prizes of $1,000, 58 prizes of $200 and 49 prizes of $100.
